History of Allentown

Allentown, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1762 by William Allen, a prominent lawyer and judge in colonial Pennsylvania. Originally established as a small settlement called "Northampton Town" along the banks of the Lehigh River, the area quickly grew in importance due to its strategic location. In 1811, the town was officially renamed Allentown in honor of its founder.

During the 19th century, Allentown became a key industrial hub, with industries such as ironworks, textiles, and manufacturing driving its growth. The city's proximity to the Lehigh Canal and later the railroad made it an ideal location for trade and industry, earning it the nickname "The City of Industry."

Allentown also played a notable role during the American Revolution, serving as a temporary home for the Continental Army in 1777 and 1778, when George Washington’s troops sought refuge there during the harsh winter months.

Over the years, Allentown’s industrial prosperity fueled population growth and urban development. Today, the city stands as a testament to its rich history, blending its industrial roots with a modern, thriving community.
